Class Descriptions

Class Descriptions 2024

Here at Dance Dimensions, we are exam free, whilst we still have structured classes and continually work on skills and technique, our main focus is performance, all our students work towards a professional dance production that we hold every year at Whangaparaoa College, this year it will be on December 14th December at Whangaparaoa College 3 pm and 7 pm.

We now have classes in Mangawhai too, our show will be on Saturday 7th December at the Otamatea Repertory Theatre, 2 pm and 4 pm

All our classes have 3 components

  • Comprehensive warm-up and stretch
  • Across the floor and center work focussing on skills and techniques for that genre
  • Fun and challenging dance combinations

Dance Fusion

This class blends all the elements of Hip Hop and Street Funk whilst introducing you to the qualities of Jazz.  It is a high-energy class that focuses on technique, style, choreography, and stage performance.  All our music is carefully selected and we ensure that all of our choreography is age-appropriate.  Students 10 years+ will perform two routines at the end of year production. The first routine will be geared towards the Hip Hop/Street funk genre and the second will explore themed choreography which often has more of a Jazz flavor. No exams just pure fun.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop is urban, it’s street, it’s diverse, and forever changing.  It is a high-energy class that uses the latest sounds in RnB and pop music together with movements influenced by some of today’s hottest choreographers. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, popping, whacking, krumping, and Iso, as well as freestyle movement to give the students the opportunity to develop their own sense of style.

Lyrical

Lyrical dance is a dance style that blends ballet, jazz, and contemporary. Music used for lyrical is typically emotionally charged and expressive. Music may consist of many genres including ballads, pop, rock, and hip-hop. Movements in lyrical dance are characterized by fluidity and grace, with the dancer flowing seamlessly from one move to another, holding finishing steps as long as possible. Leaps are exceptionally high and soaring, and turns are fluid and continuous. The class is made up of three components – Warm-up, techniques such as turns, leaps, and flexibility, and then they work on a choreographed routine.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance incorporates a collection of methods and techniques found in, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.  It explores self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of gravity, and the efficiency of muscle use and safe body alignment. Classes start with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build up to more elaborate dance routines.

Theatre Jazz

This class is the perfect blend of dance and acting. We place a large emphasis on stage performance and character work. Our routines are based around choreography from Broadway and TV musicals such as Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz, Annie, and Lion King, This class is loads of fun and really popular with all our students.

Boys Hip Hop

Have fun and be part of an all-boys hip hop class designed to develop Hip Hop technique and style incorporating, Krumping, Popping, Locking, Iso, and Swag.  A strong focus is placed on performance skills to deliver a strong and entertaining hip-hop performance in the show at the end of the year

Performance/Crews

These classes are by invitation only, unless you get in via an audition.  We hold auditions at the end of every year and current performance pupils have a placement audition as some of you may change performance classes.  Performance classes are for our most dedicated passionate and enthusiastic students.  One of the requirements is that you must do two or more classes per week, and we would prefer that the second class be a more technical based class such as Extension, Lyrical, Jazz, or Contemporary.  You also have to commit to a couple of competitions per year and performance opportunities

If you think you have what it takes and are willing to commit please email me at silverdale@dancedimensions.co.nz
